How It Works:
You sign up as a Amazon Associate and once approved, you'll have access to their inventory of books, appliances, gadgets, automobile products, you name it, if it's on their inventory list of approved affiliate products, then it's all game.
What You'll Need
You'll need an Amazon Associate Account. The way you promote it is up to you, as long as you follow their TOS.
If you decide plan to sell on your own website, then you'll need to get a domain name (I get mine through NameCheap), web hosting (I recommend Host Gator) and possibly a email marketing autoresponder for email marketing (can't go wrong with Aweber).
There are several other services you can get, but these are good enough to start. If you go over to my official website Dollar Tycoon, I can show you how to setup these accounts.

There are many ways to take maximize your earning potential online with Amazon. It all depends on how you setup it up, how well you can organize and being proactive in both marketing and optimization.
